material girl

konnichi-wa to heARTists and heART lovers everywhere!

it’s the 8th day of the 8th month and time to share more of Yuri’s amazing heARTwork.

again, we’re in post production on our War Brides of Japan documentary. so, we’ll have to keep this blog post short and sweet.

btw, you can request membership in our Facebook group, Japanese War Brides & Families & Friends, where we discuss our Japanese war bride mothers.

a favorite medium for Yuri to work in was material. how that girl loved to sew!

here, she's dressed as the famous judo sensei Sanshiro Sugata in a kimono she made herself for this particular dance recital.

and here, she shows off a kimono and a football helmut she designed for her grandson when he was  just a toddler.

Yuri's favorite heARTworks

konnichi-wa, heARTists and supporters of Yuri's heARTwork. it’s the 8th day of the 6th month and time for more heARTwork by Yuri.

but wait, we’re still busy editing our War Brides of Japan documentary, so we only have a few images for you; some of Yuri’s favorite things.

here’s a self-portrait of her as a cross-dressing dancer. seriously, she took on the role of a famous judo master in a dance recital, and even made the man’s kimono herself. then, she painted herself from a photo.

Yuri means lily flower, and here are lilies that Yuri grew in her garden.

finally, here’s a plate of her homemade spaghetti with steamed green beans, and garlic toast from her favorite whole wheat bread that she baked from scratch.

and here are all the links to the War Brides of Japan documentary which we're now anticipating will be completed by fall.

heARTing Yuriko, heARTing Women Everywhere!

Yuri, lei-making in Honolulu
a heARTy International Women’s Day to all heART lovers everywhere!

it’s the 8th day of the 3rd month and time to celebrate more of Yuri’s heARTwork with her fans.

apologies for missing you last month, but our documentary War Brides of Japan is taking us away from regularly posting on this blog. arrigatou for understanding.

while we were gone, Hinamatsuri (Girls Day or Dolls Day) was celebrated in Japan on March 3.

above is a photo of a celebratory greeting card that the wife of one of Yuri’s nephews sent us. when the button is pressed, the lanterns light up and a Japanese tune plays.

girl and boy dolls crocheted by Yuri

originally, Dolls Day was for removing bad luck and curses. in ancient times, people believed they could speak their misfortunes into their dolls, then sail them away down the river; thus, banishing evil from their lives. in modern times, Japanese girls get expensive replicas of the royal family—emperor, empress and other court figures—then, have them set up in display along with offerings of food like sweet mochi deserts.

speaking of dolls, here are a few more that Yuriko made by hand.
