greetings, heARTists and heART lovers of the multiverse.

it’s the 8th day of the 12th month, and time for more heARTwork by Yuri.

it’s also time to celebrate Bodhi Day!

like Buddha, Yuri was also born on April 8. and, they share a love for Nature.

the story of Buddha is that while he was still Prince Siddhartha, he sat under a Bodhi Tree for 7 days fasting and meditating. on the 8th day, he found enlightenment.

we fans of Yuri would like to enlighten the world about her beautiful heARTwork. especially those pieces that reflect her love for nature.

in our last blog post, we announced our intention to work on a film about her. unfortunately, life has distracted us in numerous ways and we’ve had to postpone our project--but just temporarily. we'll make up for lost time in 2021.

A Japanese heARTist Inspires A Docu*Memory Film

it’s the 8th day of the 9th month, and time for more heARTwork by Yuri.

again, this quarter, we digress from our usual exhibit of Yuri’s heARTwork (scroll down to view older posts featuring it). instead, we continue to bring you news about the 5-part series titled “War Brides of Japan, a docu*memory”, made in Yuri’s honor.

our last post featured 5 posters representing chapters of the docu*memory series, and we’re so happy to announce that all 5 were accepted as Official Selections in the Indo-Global International Film Festival, with the one titled “War Brides of Japan, a docu*memory: The Culture” winning a Best Poster award.

and, in June, we also won Best Concept and Best Trailer awards at The Buddha International Film Festival of Pune Maharashtra India, respectively, for the film “BFF’s; Buddhist Friends Forever” and the short promo trailer "This Doc Rocks! (Buddha)".

you may already know that as a Japanese war bride, Yuri used art to overcome hardships in her life. in her honor, we produced a film about Japanese war brides.

happy birthday, Buddha/Shaka from Yuriko's paper heARTwork

konnichi-wa and welcome back, fellow heARTists!

it’s the 8th day of the 5th month, and we’ve returned with more of Yuriko’s heARTwork.

but first, to all you Buddhists out there: what day do you celebrate Buddha’s birthday? in Japan, he’s called Shaka and, since they use the Gregorian calendar, his birthday is April 8—same as Yuriko’s!

this year, countries like Korea and Nepal that use the Lunar calendar celebrated Buddha’s birthday on May 4—same as Yuriko’s daughter’s!

now, how did we manage to do that?

here are some of Yuriko's paper heARTwork pieces to entertain you further.

these ohashi (chopsticks) covers are made of paper, thread and bits of cloth. the hiragana says “o-te-mo-to”, which also means chopsticks. but since this is not a blog about learning to speak Japanese, we’ll just leave it at that.

these are kasa (umbrellas) made of folded cigarette papers--a huge fad in Japan in the 1970’s.

no joke, we hung this on our holiday tree.
