little pieces of heARTwork

konnichi-wa dearheARTs!

it’s the 8th day of the 6th month, and time for more heARTwork by Yuri.

unlike our last month's featured pieces, there’s no particular medium showcased this time around. instead, we’ve selected a small diverse group featuring clamshells, wooden coasters, a ceramic plate, and papier-mâché masks.

aren’t these clamshells sweet? they’ve been sprayed with gold paint and illustrated in brightly-colored oils. we especially enjoy the one with the royal couple on it (upper right).

these wooden coasters with fauna and flora are hand-painted with oils.

this ceramic plate was illustrated with red grapes hand-painted with acrylics.

and, finally, these are Yuri’s handmade papier-mâché masks. if you’re familiar with Japanese culture, you’ll recognize them as they are often featured in Noh plays.

happy birthday, Buddha/Shaka from Yuriko's paper heARTwork

konnichi-wa and welcome back, fellow heARTists!

it’s the 8th day of the 5th month, and we’ve returned with more of Yuriko’s heARTwork.

but first, to all you Buddhists out there: what day do you celebrate Buddha’s birthday? in Japan, he’s called Shaka and, since they use the Gregorian calendar, his birthday is April 8—same as Yuriko’s!

this year, countries like Korea and Nepal that use the Lunar calendar celebrated Buddha’s birthday on May 4—same as Yuriko’s daughter’s!

now, how did we manage to do that?

here are some of Yuriko's paper heARTwork pieces to entertain you further.

these ohashi (chopsticks) covers are made of paper, thread and bits of cloth. the hiragana says “o-te-mo-to”, which also means chopsticks. but since this is not a blog about learning to speak Japanese, we’ll just leave it at that.

here's a fan made from a dress pattern and bamboo.

these are kasa (umbrellas) made of folded cigarette papers--a huge fad in Japan in the 1970’s.

no joke, we hung this on our holiday tree.

apologies to all true vegan Buddhists, but we used expired fish to make these on rice paper.

and, of course, the ubiquitous origami cranes. 1,000, you say? you must be kidding. here are seven.

is your HEART into ART?

do you love art? is your heart into art? then, welcome!

on the 8th day of every month, we will feature heARTwork by Yuri, right here at this blog.

a brief bio…

born in Tokyo, Yuriko left for the U.S. after marrying an American soldier. Living in Texas, Germany and Washington State, she raised two children and six different dogs named Bosco, Tiger, Lulu, Shogun, Princess and Muffin.

all her life, Yuriko made art. besides being a talented seamstress who could sew anything by hand, she also made quilts, crocheted doilies and miniature high heels, knitted hats and shawls, made Japanese dolls, cloth puppets and Noh masks, carved illustrations in wood, created all kinds of knickknacks, and eventually painted in oils on canvass, clam shells and wood.

some of Yuriko’s heARTwork in oils can be seen at this website:

coming soon…photos of her delicious home-grown, home-cooked meals!

in celebration of Yuriko’s April 8th birthday (and Buddha's), we present you with these selections from her collection of oil painted farmhouses. even though she grew up in the big city of Tokyo, she was just a country girl at heART.
